The power industry is ready to save the world

By Paul O’Shea Okay, maybe it’s not quite that amazing but the industry has already saved 50,000 TW/h over the last 20 years and will continue to save more. The plenary speaker at this year’s APEC show in Long Beach, CA was Dr.Jayant Baliga from NC State University and he talked about “The role of [...]

Major Revisions Booting-up in Version 6 of ENERGY STAR’s Computer Program?

The U.S. EPA continues on their quest to reduce computer energy waste. A couple of weeks ago, I attended a stakeholder meeting held to discuss draft 2, version 2 of the ENERGY STAR® Program Requirements for Computers. Over the years, computer program specs have gotten more comprehensive (and complicated). Early versions consisted of simple modal [...]

Turning a Technology-Neutral Eye Towards Efficient Light Bulbs

When comparing performance and reliability of an ENERGY STAR compliant CFL light bulb to an ENERGY STAR compliant LED light bulb, it can get confusing. Last week, the U.S. EPA got one step closer towards ending the confusion and overlap between different efficiency lighting programs by publishing its first draft of a specification that harmonizes [...]

China Unveils Set-Top Box Standard

China has just published its first Set-Top Box (STB) efficiency standard, GB 25957-2010. While other government agencies (i.e., ENERGY STAR, EC Code of Conduct) have already gone through multiple generations of STB efficiency programs (settling on a methodology that limits the total typical energy consumption (TEC) in kWh that a complex STB consumes annually), China [...]

ENERGY STAR Publishes First Draft of Battery Charger Systems Spec

Last summer, I wrote about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to begin revising its original Battery Charger Systems (BCS) efficiency program. At that time, both the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) were well along in the process of developing their own independent BCS efficiency programs. The big [...]

2011 PSMA Power Technology Roadmap is available

The 2011 PSMA Power Technology Roadmap report from the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) is available for PSMA members and the industry. It is the seventh roadmap in a series, previously completed every three years to look at the power technology and power delivery trends over the next four to five years. In response to [...]

ENERGY STAR Publishes Test Method for Uninterruptible Power Supplies

ENERGY STAR recently released the final draft of its test method for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs). UPSs are primarily used to protect computer systems and servers from disruption and data loss when the main power fails. The Test Method serves as the basis for determining product compliance with the future specification.
