Intel’s Atom Z2460 processor

By Jim Harrison

Intel announced an upcoming cell phone with an Intel processor at CES. The Android OS phone has now been released in India (The 3G Xolo X900) and should be here by the end of the year. We now have some details on the Atom Z2460 processor used in the phone.

First, Intel notes it will only be sold to ‘OEMS’. The processor runs at 1300 MHz and comes in a 617-ball BGA package that is 0.47 x 0.47 inches. Intel says it takes only 18 mW in standby (the iPhone CPU takes ~38 mW, they say). Intel also states the new chip has about 1/3rd more processing power than the iPhone 4s CPU.

The Z2460 has a 64-bit data buss, a 512 Kbyte L2 cache, and a dual-channel 32-bit DDR2 memory controller. An SGX 540 graphics controller, a video encoder/decoder, a floating-point unit, and a crypto unit are all built in.
