Capacitive touch and OLED: A combination whose use I dread

Welcome to Brian Dipert On Technology: An Electronic Products Ongoing Journey. Hopefully at least some of you recall my name from my 14+ years with EDN Magazine, a career that wrapped up at the end of May and which included (among other things) a six-plus year run of the Brian’s Brain blog. Thanks to the [...]

A smart way to go 3D

By Richard Comerford, Editor, Electronic Products In New York City last night at Digital Experience (a press-only table-top exhibit organized by Pepcom), I had a chance to play with the Thrill 4G smartphone introduced recently by LG; it’s scheduled to be made available in the U.S. soon by AT&T. GaN-on-Si LED technology poised to drive down SSL lighting costs

With the demonstration today of its 135 lm/W cool-white and 85 lm/W warm-white Gallium-Nitride-on-Silicon-based LED technology, Bridgelux says it has achieved a major breakthrough in solid-state lighting. Growing the LED on silicon wafers rather sapphire or silicon carbide substrates can deliver a 75% improvement in cost over current approaches. Since the LED is about half [...]

What kind of “environmental threat” do LEDs present?

In Electronic Products’ March 2011 Viewpoint, I discussed having recently come across a press release from the University of California, Irvine with the headline “LED products billed as eco-friendly contain toxic metals, study finds.” Since writing the viewpoint, I’ve had the opportunity to get hold of the research paper on which the press release is [...]

CES: See what AKM has for demo

AKM (www.akm.com) is demonstrating a variety of innovative technology solutions for consumer electronic devices. Amongst the products they are showing, is the IR10100 infrared sensor (see video below), used to detect human body heat.  The demo senses human presence without using an external IR emitter.  As a person approaches thesystem, the LEDs display the distance [...]
